Advocacy seminars for parents? This would have to be state-specific, or at least type-of-state-specific (in the sense that a lot of what works in PA wouldn't do any good in MA), but even in places with no laws to help us, some parents get cooperation and some don't, and it would be good to learn from experience. --Aimee
I agree with Aimee, although I think there should be working sessions on re-forming advocacy. There's plenty of research on the right thing to do for educating kids, now we need to think of smarter ways to advocate. We can't depend on legislation to make a difference, nor can we realistically expect funding issues to change. But what else is possible? How do we address the key issues with advocacy and move beyond them?
Assuming we do this, are there specific national experts you would recommend? Are there specific state experts either for states we will be in or whose skills/knowledge are transferable?

If we return to Chicago in 2010, we'll probably return to June, I believe. The gap between Boston and Chicago was nice, but there may be too much to compete with in the summer, post school.
We will also get back closer to an airport - though I'm not sure whether we're better served by being near Midway - perhaps if we can work a deal with Southwest?
Return to the West « Result #6 on Jul 18, 2009, 1:21pm »
Beyond IQ is returning to the West Coast for the first time since 2002!
We are looking for the right place to be and the right folks to help.
It would be great to have suggestions for possible locations and hotels within those locations.
To give you an idea of what we are seeking, in terms of hotel space, in general, we want:
1 large space for keynotes - up to 150 seats would be good, for all that we have not yet needed that many. (Theater style)
2 break out rooms for the adults' program. (Theater style set up)
2 rooms for the children's program. (rectangular tables)
1 room for games and possibly vendors as well - though vendors could go elsewhere, like a hall or the back of the keynote room. (rectangular and circular tables, mixed)
1 room for the YA program - more often than not, it's been in a hotel suite, but it is not required.
We have been in the following hotels: Sheraton Colonial - Wakefield, MA Holiday Inn - Boxboro, MA Best Western - Manchester, NH Radisson - Chelmsford, MA Four Points (by Sheraton) - Billerica, MA
Do any of you have specific feedback about one or another of these hotels?
Do you have specific recommendations of hotels you would like to see us consider, based on experience with them?
I'll be adding in my thoughts shortly.
My intention/hope is to have this decision settled by the end of August, at the latest.

The Marriott Suites O'Hare won't work, as they do not have enough space for us, but the Renaissance Suites O'Hare (same management company) is going to submit a proposal, I expect. And we should have a proposal tomorrow from the Embassy Suites.
ETA: No Embassy Suites proposal as of now. I'm not thrilled.

I've reviewed the posts from 2004-5, to see what space thoughts people had.
Hotels near O'Hare that I am looking at include the Embassy Suites, the Holiday Inn Express Hotel & Suites, the Chicago Marriott® Suites O'Hare, and the Sheraton Gateway Suites Chicago O'Hare.
I am currently looking exclusively at suites hotels because the feedback I have gotten from families consistently is that those spaces work best. I am open to considering a college campus with a hotel nearby, but most folks have indicated a strong preference for having the conference space under the same roof as the sleeping quarters.
I think the only way that would work is if we were hosted by the college, rather than renting function space from them.
Does anybody have connections that would allow them to help us to find such a university/college sponsor? ********* As for dates, other than Father's Day, are there any dates that folks think we should either avoid or aim for?
